Got your email about your site… looks good. I will have to add you to my blogroll.

As for kid’s hunting books, Big Red by Jim Kjelgaard is my all time favorite!

I am looking for kids novels on fishing & hunting. I have an 8 year old boy who loves the outdoors and I am unable to find any novels in this category. Thanks. MW

  5. MW,
This a great question. I’m a former teacher and had to steer kids toward wilderness adventure when they asked for hunting and fishing. There’s not a lot out there.
Having said that, Gary Paulsen is a good author of novels for kids interested in the outdoors. His Brian series (begins with HATCHET) is a great survival story and actually gets a lot of boys into reading. The whole series is good.
WHERE THE RED FERN GROWS is great and holds up well for a classic.
And BIG RED (as Jeff suggested above) gets strong reviews.

    Ron,
Thanks for including our book “My First Deer Hunt” on your list. We’ve also released “My First Turkey Hunt” and “My First Fishing Trip” comes out soon.

My 10 year old son just finished “Wild Life” by Cynthia DeFelice. It is about a boy and pheasant hunting and much more. He burned through this book and he really has to be made to read on any other day.

I am a teacher-librarian in the deer-hunting Mecka of southern Iowa, and I am writing my master’s paper on hunting books for youth. I will be using this blog for one of many citations, so thank you 🙂 When I complete my paper and project, I will let you know…I’ll be creating a comprehensive bibliography of books that feature hunting, and it will be on the web, so the whole world can benefit.

    Tisha by Suzanne Colts.
It’s a bunch of memories a boy had with his favorite hunting dog.
